The fishing season has begun again! ๐Ÿฆž๐ŸŽ‰

Finally we are allowed to fish for crayfish again. The closed season is over. Due to the mild weather, large quantities are being caught.
To give adult eels a chance to migrate to the sea to reproduce, there is a legal closed time for eel fishing, with traps in particular, from September 1 to November 30.

On the contrary, most of our local fishermen catch the crayfish with traps, and are thus inactive for 3 months of the year. This while they hardly catch eel in the polder waters! On top of that, the crayfish lays eggs during this period and thus can reproduce unhindered.

To say the least, this is an awkward confluence that we want to change in the coming years. If we really want to tackle invasive crayfish properly, it must be possible to catch crayfish (with eggs) all year round with the best possible trapping gear. Traps are certainly one of these, also considering the volume that can be caught with a trap compared to the baskets that are allowed during the closed period.

But good news: that closed period is now over, and that means we have plenty of fresh, Dutch crayfish available again! Our crayfish are caught fresh daily and are perfect for culinary applications – from classic dishes to innovative creations. Plus, by eating crayfish you help keep Dutch waters in balance, as these exotics have a significant impact on our ecosystems.

Want to order crayfish? You can do so by phone or through our crayfish webshop.
